The active ingredient in Kedi Qinghao is Artemisinin — the extraction of Artemisia annua. Professor Youyou Tu was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2015 for this discovery, which revolutionised how malaria is fought worldwide. Artemisinin fights the ultra-structure of malaria parasites in the erythrocytes phase, leading to their termination in the body cells. Parasites die rapidly due to loss of nutrition and cytoplasm — making this the most effective treatment for even drug-resistant malaria.
